This region was occupied by the British Empire from World War I until 1948.
In Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, Israel won the war on most fronts. However, much of its heartland was not included in the cease-fire agreements at the end of the war.
This led to the Jordanian occupation between 1948 and 1967 of most of Israel’s holiest cities. Even the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount weren’t part of the State of Israel for 19 years.
Today, more than half a million Jews live in the areas that were liberated in the Six Day War. These areas are generally referred to as Judea and Samaria.
