Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico was directly challenged by a voter during a CNN town hall after claiming the Bible is silent on abortion.
During the event, Talarico, an ordained Presbyterian minister and state representative, told a Catholic audience member that “the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion.” The voter pushed back, stating, “The Bible is not silent on abortion. There is the Ten Commandments, thou shalt not kill, and as Catholics, we take great insult when it’s spouted that way.”
The exchange quickly spread online. Talarico is running against pro-life Republican Ken Paxton and has frequently referenced his Christian faith while supporting abortion access.
Scripture addresses the value of human life from the earliest stages. The Sixth Commandment states: “Thou shalt not kill.” (Exodus 20:13, KJV)
God declares knowledge of individuals before conception: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5, KJV)
The Bible also describes God forming life in the womb: “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:13-16, KJV)
These passages affirm that God knows and forms human life prior to birth.
