British counter-terrorism police re-arrested two men on October 20, 2026, on suspicion of assisting Iranian intelligence in connection with suspicious activity near RAF Fairford last month.
The men are a 24-year-old British national, originally arrested near the Gloucestershire air base on September 27, and a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national previously arrested in London on October 1. Both are from the Westminster area of London. They were re-arrested under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, which covers assisting a foreign intelligence service.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, said: “We consider it highly likely that there is Iranian state involvement.” Investigators continue to examine the level of that involvement and its aims.
The original incident occurred in the early hours of September 27 when five British men in their 20s were arrested near RAF Fairford after police were alerted to suspicious vans and masked individuals close to the base perimeter. Officers found a quantity of petrol but no explosive devices. The men were later released on bail. A total of seven men have been arrested in the investigation so far.
RAF Fairford has been used by U.S. bombers for operations related to Iran. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously stated that the activity was highly likely coordinated in Iran and almost certainly directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran has denied any involvement.
The investigation remains active.
