White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia is facing questions about her professional credentials after describing herself as a lawyer and being introduced by President Donald Trump as an attorney.
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law in 2011. Multiple reports, including from the Wall Street Journal, state that she sat for the California bar exam but did not pass. No public records show her as licensed to practice law in California or any other U.S. state where she has lived or worked.
When asked by reporters which state she passed the bar exam in, Zacharia replied, “when I moved to China.” In a subsequent interview, she acknowledged failing the bar exam but maintained she had not misrepresented herself, distinguishing between holding a law degree and being a licensed “attorney.”
The California State Bar confirmed it has no record of her being licensed under her current or previous names. A watchdog group has filed a complaint with the California State Bar alleging she misled the public by referring to herself as a lawyer without a license.
Zacharia began serving as press secretary this week. The White House has not issued a detailed public response beyond her own statements.
