Three children and one adult were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15, 2026, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
The shooter, a 16-year-old male, was also killed at the scene. Police said the person who stopped the shooter “may have been a bystander.”
Bend Police Department spokesperson Sheila Miller reported that the first 911 call came in at approximately 12:59 p.m. about an unknown person shooting into a car outside the school. Within about a minute, multiple additional 911 calls reported shooting inside the building. Officers arrived shortly after 1 p.m. and found the shooter already dead.
At least two other people were transported to the hospital. The school, which serves roughly 400 to 450 students, was locked down and a reunification site was established for families.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said the district was “stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy.” All district schools were closed the following day, and extracurricular activities were canceled.
The FBI is assisting local authorities in the investigation. Details about the motive remain under review.
