Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones, leaving at least 600,000 people without power and killing several civilians, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The strikes primarily targeted energy facilities in Kyiv, the surrounding region, and Kharkiv. Zelenskyy reported damage to dozens of power facilities and oil and gas sites. Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted only a small number of the ballistic missiles. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed power disruptions across the capital and urged residents to remain in shelters.
Zelenskyy described the assault as “ostentatious disrespect” toward U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of an “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine. Trump had claimed both sides agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, though neither Moscow nor Kyiv formally confirmed such a deal. Russia’s Defense Ministry stated it struck multiple power plants in the Kyiv and Kharkiv areas.
The attack comes as Ukraine faces shortages of air-defense systems and as winter approaches. It also follows Trump’s decision last week to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports in an effort to ease fuel prices. Zelenskyy earlier complained that Ukraine received no early warning from partners about previous ballistic missile launches.
Casualties included at least three deaths in Kyiv from strikes that also hit residential buildings. Emergency services reported additional injuries. Power and heating outages are expected to expand as damage assessments continue.
