NATO’s top military commander has issued a stark warning that the alliance would destroy “anything and everything” involved in an assault if Russia were “foolish enough” to attack any member territory.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on October 12, 2026, U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, outlined a three-pronged “theory of victory.” He said NATO forces would block an initial attack, blunt any sustained advance, and, if necessary, break the enemy’s entire warfighting system. “If someone is foolish enough to attack us, we will fight,” Grynkewich stated. “We will, in short, ensure any attack, against any ally, proves utterly futile.”
The response would not be limited to forces at the point of attack. “Should the adversary choose to press the attack or commit his reserves, we will break the warfighting system engaged against us,” he said. “This includes not just the attacking force itself, but anything and everything that supports, sustains, and controls that force.”
Grynkewich did not name Russia directly, but the message was clearly aimed at Moscow. NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept identifies Russia as the alliance’s most significant security threat. His remarks came amid European concerns over increased Russian hybrid activity, including sabotage, arson, drone incursions, and cyber operations. Russia has denied involvement in such actions and has stated it has no plans to attack any European country.
The general said he spoke publicly to reassure the alliance’s one billion citizens that NATO is prepared. “What I want to do is assure the one billion citizens of our alliance that we’ve got this. We know what we need to do. We know how we would do it,” he said. He also sought to ease concerns about U.S. commitment under President Donald Trump, noting Trump’s expressions of support at a recent NATO summit.
Grynkewich emphasized that NATO remains a defensive alliance and that conflict is neither imminent nor inevitable. European intelligence assessments have pointed to a low but growing risk of limited Russian military tests against NATO members. The commander stressed the alliance is “ready to fight tonight” if attacked while maintaining open communication channels to avoid misunderstandings.
