A 24-year-old Kansas man was arrested for allegedly making online threats to shoot President Donald Trump ahead of a campaign rally in the Wichita area.
Jaden J. Read of Clearwater, Kansas, was taken into custody on Saturday after a Crime Stoppers tip led investigators to Facebook comments he allegedly posted on local news articles about Trump’s planned visit. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas, the comments included statements such as “Let’s shoot Trump honestly, where’s our shooter?” and references to acquiring a .308 rifle, mapping out rooftops near the venue, and “finna get kirked.”
Federal authorities charged Read with making threats against the president. He remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing. The investigation involved the Secret Service, U.S. Marshals Service, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Wichita police.
U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser stated that political violence and threats of political violence will not be tolerated, while noting that the First Amendment allows for robust disagreement within constitutional limits.
Despite the threats, Trump held a rally on Monday in Park City, near Wichita, attended by approximately 6,000 people.
