Italy’s government is deploying 500 soldiers to Milan following days of protests over the high cost of living that escalated into clashes with police, vandalism, and looting.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration announced the move after unrest over the weekend in Milan and other northern cities including Bologna, Turin, Brescia, and Bergamo. Police detained 271 young people in Milan, with 32 formally arrested, including 23 minors and 13 foreign nationals.
Hooded groups set bins on fire, smashed windows, and ransacked shops. Luxury retailers in the city’s fashion district, including Chanel, Tiffany, and Dior, closed early and removed merchandise from display windows as a precaution. Other stores such as Decathlon and Vodafone were also targeted.
The government is preparing tougher security measures, including possible extensions of preventive detention for minors and restrictions on gatherings deemed a threat to public order. Officials described the response as firm against attacks on the state and violence involving young people.
A new protest movement has called for further demonstrations in Milan and other cities this coming Saturday. The unrest forms part of wider cost-of-living protests that have also occurred in France and other European countries.
