Federal authorities are investigating a series of letters containing “suspicious substances” that have been mailed to congressional offices and state election offices across the United States.
The FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Capitol Police are jointly handling the probe. An FBI statement confirmed the agencies are examining mailings sent to various addresses nationwide, including Secretary of State offices and related election offices. Some of the letters contained an unknown substance.
Recipients have been urged to treat the mailings as potentially hazardous. Law enforcement is working to intercept additional letters, though officials noted it is possible some may still reach their destinations.
The incidents come roughly three weeks before the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. Election offices in states including Louisiana and Oklahoma received envelopes with a powdery substance, prompting evacuations in some cases. The Postal Service intercepted at least one similar package intended for the Ohio secretary of state’s office. Several Senate offices also received notifications about intercepted mail.
Authorities are working to identify the individual or individuals responsible. The situation echoes earlier 2023 incidents in which election offices received envelopes containing fentanyl.
