In the 2026 midterm elections held on November 3, Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of Congress.
According to results reported as of November 4, Democrats hold approximately 54 seats in the Senate (including independents who caucus with them) compared to 44 for Republicans, with a net gain of about seven seats. Key flips included races in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina, and Maine.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats have secured a majority with roughly 228 to 234 seats projected, while Republicans hold around 138 to 139, representing a net Democratic gain of more than 25 seats. Enough races have been called to give Democrats control of the chamber.
Several races remain uncalled or are still being counted, including some Senate contests. Democrats also made gains in several gubernatorial races.
President Donald Trump and Republican leaders have acknowledged the results. Trump stated that he was not on the ballot and suggested the outcome would have differed if he had been. Vice President JD Vance pointed to the ongoing conflict involving Iran as a factor in the losses.
Control of both the House and Senate will shift to Democrats when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.
