Deadly Houthi Attack on Riyadh Airport Kills 12 and Injures Hundreds

A Houthi missile strike on Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10, 2026, killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300, marking the deadliest attack on the kingdom in more than a decade. The Iran-backed Yemeni group claimed responsibility for the assault, which struck a domestic terminal area and forced the suspension of airport operations.

Saudi civil aviation authorities reported the victims included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals, and one each from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Egypt. Hundreds of the wounded received treatment at hospitals across the capital, with some in critical condition. Surveillance footage and witness accounts described a sudden blast that caused structural damage, including collapsed ceiling sections, sending passengers fleeing amid smoke and debris.

This was the third Houthi attack on the same airport in roughly a week. Earlier strikes had already caused fatalities, including a pilot, and damaged aircraft on the tarmac. A follow-up strike on October 11 killed one Pakistani resident and injured 11 others. Saudi air defenses later intercepted additional missiles, and the airport remained closed for an extended period. The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s government called the October 10 attack a “war crime” and vowed a decisive response.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the “horrific terrorist attack” and convened a security meeting at military headquarters in Tel Aviv with Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior officials. Discussions covered threats involving Iran, Gaza, and Lebanon. Netanyahu extended Israel’s condolences to the victims’ families.

U.S. President Donald Trump described the attack as “terrible” and “not acceptable.” He said he planned to speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and left open the possibility of American involvement in strikes against the Houthis: “We may. We’re gonna look at it. We just found out about the recent attack, so we’ll make a decision. We move very quickly.”

The strikes come amid escalating fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces after a ceasefire unraveled. The Houthis have warned international airlines to avoid Saudi airspace, declaring it a military operations zone. Saudi officials have noted pressures on interceptor missile stocks and have repositioned air defenses to protect critical infrastructure.

The incident has heightened concerns about wider regional escalation involving Iranian proxies, energy security, and civilian aviation safety across the Persian Gulf. Investigations and coalition responses remain ongoing as of mid-October 2026.
