Chicago Transgender Woman Arrested For Stabbing Stranger 13 Times, Leaving Behind The Knife Embedded In Their Skull

A 32-year-old transgender woman from Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing a 50-year-old man 13 times near a gas station on the city’s Far South Side. The attack on October 7, 2026, was so forceful that a portion of the knife blade broke off and remained embedded in the victim’s skull.

Prosecutors identify the accused as Kelly Day. The victim, Larry Young, died from multiple sharp-force injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. A pathologist recovered the broken metal tip of the blade from Young’s skull during the autopsy.

The confrontation occurred in the 1400 block of East 87th Street in front of Day’s 7-year-old stepson. According to Assistant State’s Attorney Sara Grgurovic, Day and Young, who were strangers, argued after Young made remarks about Day’s gender identity. Day, who was assigned male at birth but identifies as a woman, had earlier that day reported being mocked by a separate group for using a women’s restroom at a McDonald’s.

Prosecutors said Young pushed Day during the dispute and then walked away toward a nearby gas station. Day allegedly told her wife she did not want “bullies” to get away with mocking her gender, followed Young across the street, and re-engaged him. Surveillance video from the gas station showed Day standing over Young as he lay on the ground and stabbing him repeatedly in the head, neck, and upper shoulders.

Day called 911, initially claiming she had been injured while defending herself against a “pervert.” She later called again and said she had cut herself while cooking. Police recovered a knife with part of the blade missing. Day was arrested at a hospital where she sought treatment for a cut finger.

Day has claimed self-defense, telling investigators that Young used a gay slur, made a gun gesture, and threatened her and her wife. Prosecutors countered that the surveillance video and Day’s decision to pursue Young after he walked away undercut that claim. Judge John Hock ordered Day held without bond pending trial, citing the brutality of the attack. Day is scheduled to return to court on October 13, 2026.
