The Israeli and American bombing campaigns in Iran have set back the country’s nuclear program by anywhere from “a few months,” as the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grassi, has declared, to a “few years,” as is now claimed by the Trump administration, the CIA, and more recently, by the Israelis, too. But whatever the delay, Iran has clearly not stopped its nuclear program, and has gone back, according to intelligence services, to enriching uranium to just below weapons grade, though where that enrichment is taking place has not been made known. Furthermore, the ballistic missile program, while greatly damaged by the IDF, is still running, and it is now known that the range of those missiles will allow them to land on targets in Europe, and soon, if nothing is done, to strike targets in the eastern United States. More on Iran’s ballistic missile program can be found here: “Israeli military official says Iran’s missiles can hit Europe, aiming to reach east coast of US,” by Felice Friedson, The Media Line <www.jpost.com/international/article-860021>, July 4, 2025:
*An Israeli military official confirmed that Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities now pose an existential threat to both Israel and the broader Middle East.*
*Speaking at a press briefing, the official said that Iran’s missile stockpile, which exceeds 2,000, has created a logistical bottleneck. Still, even with the limitation of only about 400 missile launchers, the Iranian regime has been able to launch devastating strikes.*
Fortunately, Israel’s preemptive strikes against Iranian missile launchers have significantly reduced the number of projectiles that could reach Israeli targets. However, the official warned that the quantity and quality of missiles Iran possesses remain a grave concern.
The official discussed a series of threats emanating from Iran, focusing particularly on Iran’s ballistic missile program, nuclear ambitions, and a strategic “ring of fire” around Israel.
Iran’s long-term goal, according to the official, is not just to challenge Israel but to build a military arsenal capable of striking European capitals and eventually the East Coast of the United States.
“The missiles that Iran is developing can already reach Europe, and they have plans for further advancements that could enable them to strike the United States,” the official said.
The official also detailed the urgency of dealing with Iran’s nuclear program, which has been advancing behind the scenes despite the appearance of diplomatic talks. Iran already has enough enriched uranium for at least 10 atomic bombs….
The official identified what he termed a “triple existential threat” posed by Iran. This includes the nuclear weapons program, the ballistic missile threat, and the increasing encirclement of Israel by Iranian-backed forces. “Iran has been funding proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq to create a ring of fire around Israel,” the official explained. “This is not just a theoretical threat; it’s a practical, ongoing effort that we’ve been fighting against on multiple fronts.”…
In theory, Iran has several proxies — Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen being the most portent — to threaten Israel. But their ability to help Iran is now nonexistent. Hamas has been smashed by the IDF, losing at least half of its combatants and 80% of its weaponry. Hezbollah has lost thousands of its troops, both killed and wounded (as with the “exploding pagers” that wounded nearly 4,000 combatants so severely that they can no longer fight) and has lost 80-90% of its once-formidable arsenal of150,000 missiles and rockets. Iran’s Shia proxy in Syria, the Alawite minority that ran the country and made life difficult for Sunnis, has been overthrown and Syria has gone from being a close ally to Iran to becoming its mortal enemy under the rule of the Sunni Ahmed al-Sharaa, who will neither forgive nor forget how Iran supported Assad against the Sunnis trying to unseat him. Among the proxies Iran could once count on, only the distant Houthis in Yemen remain, but both their port at Hodeidah and their airport at Sanaa have been badly damaged, and it has proven extremely difficult for Iran, itself reeling from attack, to resupply them with weapons either by air or by sea. The steep decrease in the number of missiles and drones fired by the Houthis is testimony to their perilously low stocks of such weapons.
The Media Line asked the official to comment on concerns regarding the use of cluster bombs in the conflict, which Iran has deployed to increase civilian casualties. “Iran’s use of cluster bombs is a war crime,” the official said. “These weapons disperse small bombs over a wide area, and as civilians approach, they can be killed by the lingering munitions. Fortunately, our people followed safety guidelines, and most civilians stayed in bomb shelters, which minimized the casualties.”
The use of cluster bombs has been prohibited by international treaties, but this has had no effect on Assad’s Syria, Iran’s closest ally, which also produced large stocks of chemical weapons, which have been prohibited by international treaty.
Israel’s multi-layered defense, consisting of Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 surface-to-air missiles for short-range missile attacks, the David’s Sling missiles to protect against mid-to-long range missiles, and the Iron Dome defenses that protect against long-range ballistic missiles, managed to intercept Iranian missiles so successfully that only 29 Israelis died in those massive attacks, and not a single Israeli soldier on active duty died (exactly one reserve soldier on leave was killed at home).
The minute Iran restarts its nuclear program, the Israelis — and perhaps even the Americans — will resume their attacks on the program. The Iranian leaders, fanatical to the last, are determined nonetheless to continue, no doubt hoping to build nuclear enrichment sites smack in the middle of major cities, so that the IDF will hesitate to strike them, fearing the horrendous lost of civilian life.
The Israelis are perfectly aware that the mad mullahs are prepared to keep sacrificing the well-being of ordinary Iranians to their goal of destroying Israel. The Mossad still has its agents and local collaborators all over Iran, despite Tehran’s panicky attempt to locate those agents, sweeping up thousands of Iranians in its dragnets, with most, or almost all, of those being held having nothing to do with spying for Israel. But the Iranians are showing their people that “something is being done.”
The Israelis will keep on keeping on, always one step ahead of the Iranians. They will find out, through their extensive spy network, exactly where to look for new uranium enrichment plants, and other plants connected to the construction of nuclear weapons, and will eventually find where the 900 pounds of missing enriched uranium has been hidden. And they will not hesitate to bomb any new sites, with or without American participation. Israel’s war on Iran’s nuclear program will continue until a new and democratic regime comes to power in Iran, and renounces its predecessor’s nuclear ambitions. Given the regime’s humiliation at the hands of the Israelis and the Americans, the extraordinary reign of terror instituted by Tehran to find Israeli spies and to show the population that something is being done, and the continuing collapse of Iran’s economy, that new regime may not be so far away.
