President Donald Trump’s administration has made public more than 230,000 previously classified files related to the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., part of a sweeping declassification order also targeting sealed records on the killings of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, tasked with carrying out the directive, announced the release Monday, describing it as a long-overdue reckoning with the federal government’s involvement in one of the nation’s most tragic chapters.
“The American people have waited nearly 60 years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard said in a statement. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our mission to deliver complete transparency.”
The files, now available through the National Archives at www.archives.gov <www.archives.gov/research/mlk>, include FBI case records, surveillance memos, and foreign reports on James Earl Ray’s movements after the murder. One notable entry details conversations between Ray and a former cellmate that allegedly touched on an assassination plot.
Canadian police files also document Ray’s attempted flight from justice across the border. DOJ officials confirmed that evidence from international and domestic sources was included in the disclosures.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi praised the release, saying, “The Department of Justice is proud to support this moment of transparency. The American people deserve answers.”
While some heralded the move as a historic step toward government accountability, King’s children urged the public to engage with the files respectfully.
“We ask those who engage with the release of these files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for our family’s continuing grief,” Bernice King and Martin Luther King III said in a statement on X, acknowledging the deeply personal nature of the material and its painful resonance more than five decades after their father’s murder.
The White House confirmed that Trump ordered the declassification effort immediately upon taking office, with Gabbard later noting that hundreds of staffers had worked for months to scan decades-old records that had never been digitized or reviewed.
“Much of this had sat untouched in storage since the 1960s,” Gabbard said in an April briefing to the president.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, outside the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The files made public this week aim to shed new light on longstanding questions surrounding Ray’s motives, the government’s knowledge, and potential foreign involvement.
Gabbard said additional disclosures related to Robert F. Kennedy’s killing are expected later this year.
