Tehran defies pressure as Israeli airstrikes target nuclear sites; Trump calls for surrender, warns of U.S. air dominance.

Iran issued a stark warning Wednesday that any U.S. involvement in the escalating conflict with Israel would trigger “all-out war,” even as Israeli warplanes hammered Iranian military and nuclear targets for a sixth straight day. Despite the intensified bombardment, Iranian officials vowed to continue their disputed nuclear program, rejecting calls to curb uranium enrichment.
“Any American intervention would be a recipe for an all-out war in the region,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei declared in an interview with Al Jazeera English. Thousands of U.S. troops remain stationed in nearby countries within range of Iranian missiles, while the U.S. has pledged a “massive response” if attacked.
Iran’s ambassador to Geneva, Ali Bahreini, reaffirmed the country’s nuclear ambitions, telling reporters, “We will continue to produce the enriched uranium as far as we need for peaceful purposes.” He denied Israeli strikes had hampered Iranian nuclear research, adding, “Our scientists will continue their work.”
Overnight, Israeli jets struck sites in Tehran and beyond, targeting centrifuge production facilities and missile platforms. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said the strikes were designed to “remove the existential threat to the State of Israel” and “significantly impair the nuclear program in all its components.”
Defrin confirmed Israeli forces had eliminated Ali Shadmani, Iran’s “wartime chief of staff,” after just four days in the role. “We have delivered significant blows to the Iranian regime,” Defrin said in a video statement. He noted that Iran is now launching missile fire from central Iran, particularly from Isfahan.
More than 50 Israeli Air Force jets conducted three waves of strikes Tuesday night, hitting a centrifuge production site near Tehran and multiple weapons manufacturing plants. According to the UN nuclear watchdog, two buildings producing centrifuge components were destroyed, with additional damage reported at an advanced rotor facility in Tehran.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards retaliated with hypersonic Fattah-1 missiles aimed at Tel Aviv. Though Israeli air defenses intercepted the barrage, Iran also deployed a “swarm of drones,” ten of which were shot down by Israeli forces. The IDF said one of its drones was lost over Iran.
Defrin reported that 30 missiles were launched from Iran toward Israeli territory overnight, with most intercepted and no casualties reported. “We cannot afford complacency,” he warned, urging Israelis to observe home-front safety guidelines.
President Donald Trump, after initially distancing the U.S. from Israel’s surprise air campaign launched Friday, has since hinted at deeper involvement. Speaking Wednesday, Trump said he seeks “something much bigger” than a ceasefire and warned Iran’s leaders to surrender.
“We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran,” Trump posted on social media. He further stated that U.S. forces know the whereabouts of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but would not target him “for now.”
The Israeli campaign has already struck over 1,100 targets across Iran, according to Defrin, and included strikes on five Iranian attack helicopters at Kermanshah airport.
Iran’s Supreme Leader responded defiantly, vowing “no mercy” for Israel’s leadership. “We must give a strong response to the terrorist Zionist regime,” Khamenei posted on X.
The conflict has prompted mass evacuations, with more than 700 foreign nationals fleeing Iran. Israeli and Iranian residential areas have suffered casualties. Iran reports 224 deaths since Friday’s strikes began, while Israel has reported at least 24 fatalities and hundreds wounded.
Civilians in both countries are bracing for continued violence. In Tehran, long queues formed at bakeries and gas stations. Israeli residents in Tel Aviv sought refuge in underground shelters.
The strikes have derailed ongoing U.S.-Iran nuclear talks, with Tehran declaring it will not negotiate “while under attack.” The UN nuclear agency reported damage to underground enrichment halls at Iran’s Natanz facility, a critical component of its nuclear infrastructure.
Israel, believed to possess around 90 nuclear warheads according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, has long sought to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. Iran, while insisting its program is peaceful, continues to enrich uranium up to 60%—a step away from weapons-grade levels.
As diplomacy falters, French President Emmanuel Macron urged Trump to play a decisive role in restarting talks, warning that attempts at “regime change” in Iran could lead to regional chaos.
For now, the region remains on edge, with Israel’s campaign unabated and Iranian leaders refusing to bow to Western demands. The risk of wider war grows by the day.
