A US congressman told Israeli media on 4 June that Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa is “open to peace with Israel,” after recently meeting with him.
“He was open to peace with Israel. That’s what he told me,” US Congressman Marlin Stutzman, who visited Syria in April, told *Israel Hayom* <www.israelhayom.com/2025/06/04/us-congressman-who-met-al-sharaa-he-is-open-to-peace-with-israel/> newspaper.
When asked under what conditions Sharaa would sign a peace deal with Israel, Stutzman said, “That Syria remains whole and stays within its current borders.”
Stutzman was also asked if this would include the occupied Golan Heights, to which he answered, “No, he said there could be negotiations over the Golan Heights. So again, he’s open to discussing the Golan, which I felt was a good sign. I hope this indicates a real desire to build Syria into a state of commerce and prosperity.”
Israel illegally occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 war. In 1981, it annexed the territory in a move rejected by UN Security Council Resolution 497.
“There needs to be at least a conversation. Let him prove to Israel that he wants to be a friend and build a bridge. Leave the door open,” Stutzman added.
The Congressman visited Syria in April this year as part of an unofficial US delegation, which also included Congressman Cory Mills.
Mills told <thecradle.co/articles/syrias-interim-president-interested-in-joining-abraham-accords> *Bloomberg* on 24 April that Sharaa informed him of Damascus’s openness to normalizing relations with Israel.
He said that Sharaa is “open to addressing US concerns,” and that the interim president told him “Syria was interested under the right conditions in joining the Abraham Accords” – the 2020 deal brokered by US President Donald Trump, which saw the UAE and other Arab states normalize with Israel.
Trump met with Sharaa last month in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, after announcing a landmark decision to lift US sanctions on Syria.
In line with Washington’s conditions for relief, Sharaa’s administration has been cracking down on Palestinian resistance factions who for years had been given refuge and freedom of operation under the former government.
Arrests and asset seizures by Syrian authorities recently targeted members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command (PFLP-GC).
Indirect negotiations are being held between Damascus and Tel Aviv, a Syrian official said late last month.
According to a *Reuters* <www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/syria-israel-direct-talks-focused-security-sources-say-2025-05-27/> report from 27 May, several “face-to-face” meetings have been held between Syrian and Israeli officials.
After the Assad government fell, Israeli forces expanded their illegal occupation of the country, taking over large swathes of the south and practically encircling the capital.
Hundreds of Israeli airstrikes have targeted Syria since December 2024.
The Israeli army carried out a wave <thecradle.co/articles/israel-bombards-southern-syria-after-rocket-fire-at-occupied-golan-heights> of artillery shelling and airstrikes across southern Syria late on 3 June shortly after the launching of two projectiles at the occupied Golan Heights, which marked the first rocket fire from the country toward Israel in a year.
A newly formed organization called the Martyr Mohammad Deif Brigades, named after the Hamas military chief assassinated by Israel last year, claimed responsibility for the rocket attack, framing it as a response to Israeli atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza.
