The measles outbreak in Texas has now officially surpassed 500 confirmed cases <www.the-express.com/news/us-news/168319/second-unvaccinated-child-dies-measles> since the beginning of the year.
According to the Director of Lubbock Public Health, Katherine Wells, Texas confirmed on Tuesday that there have now been 505 cases of measles in 22 counties since the virus outbreak in January. <www.the-express.com/news/us-news/168080/measles-cases-texas-rising-and-spreading>
351 of those cases have been confirmed in children <www.the-express.com/news/politics/167411/trump-administration-halts-billion-health-funding> under the age of 18, which accounts for around 70%.

Wells said that only five or six of the 505 people who contracted measles were vaccinated, but this vaccination figure is likely higher due to the difficulty of tracking vaccination rates.
The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported an outbreak in the South Plains and Panhandle regions of Texas, with two fatalities in school-aged children who lived in the outbreak area. The children were not vaccinated and had no known underlying conditions.
Wells also confirmed that last week, daycare center Tiny Tots U Learning Academy in Lubbock experienced a measles outbreak, with seven confirmed cases with more children being tested since Tuesday.
At a press conference in Lubbock, Wells said, “I think we’re in this for the long haul.”
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he visited Gaines County, Texas to “be with the community in their moment of grief,” in a post on X. Kennedy has been criticized for his vaccine sceptic stance since the beginning of the outbreak.
The Health secretary has long been an advocate for alternative remedies in place of vaccines. He has repeatedly encouraged people with measles to be treated with Vitamin A and cod liver oil, even though there is no scientific evidence that supports this as an effective form of treatment.
